The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, frequently called the Evo or Lancer Evo, has been around for 10 different versions manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors. Each version of the vehicle is denoted with a roman numeral so the most recent version would be the Evo X. The Evo models are all the same in that they have four wheel drive systems and turbocharged engines. Up until the version 5 the Lancer Evo was the model officially approved for the Group A class World Rally Championship as well as the SCCA Pro Rally Championship. The Lancer Evolution is built on the traditional Lancer's platform in order to abide by the rules. Yet, the Evo has more power and is really a completely different vehicle although they share a unibody.

Originally, the Evolution was created for the Japanese market. However, its popularity was such that demand increased worldwide. So, Mitsubishi started offering the Evo in European markets as well as the United Kingdom in 1998. While popularity continued to rise the Evo found its way to the United States in 2003. All components on the Evo are "tuned" when compared to the other autos on the market. An example of this is the Lancer Evo flywheel weighs six kilos, resulting in fast engine response, as the typical flywheel weighs 12 to 15 kilograms. As a result of emission regulations and safety the Evo has become heavier with each model. However, the changes have not impacted the vehicle's popularity as of yet and they may actually help the Evo in a world that is becomingly more environmentally conscious.
